Summary

The sensational biography of Princess Diana, written with her cooperation and now featuring exclusive new material to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her death。

When Diana: Her True Story was first published in 1992, it forever changed the way the public viewed the British monarchy。 Greeted initially with disbelief and ridicule, the #1 New York Times bestselling biography has become a unique literary classic, not just because of its explosive contents but also because of Diana’s intimate involvement in the publication。 Never before had a senior royal spoken in such a raw, unfiltered way about her unhappy marriage, her relationship with the Queen, her extraordinary life inside the House of Windsor, her hopes, her fears, and her dreams。 Now, twenty-five years on, biographer Andrew Morton has revisited the secret tapes he and the late princess made to reveal startling new insights into her life and mind。 In this fully revised edition of his groundbreaking biography, Morton considers Diana’s legacy and her relevance to the modern royal family。

An icon in life and a legend in death, Diana continues to fascinate。 Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words is the closest we will ever come to her autobiography。

I started reading this book before hearing about the death of Queen Elizabeth II。 It put things into perspective。 You forget how young she was when she married Charles。 After being gaslighted by the palace and Charles’ supporters, she was eventually vindicated。 It took a toll。 With this book she tells her story。

Meh。 Writing wasn’t that great。 Pretty boring。 Could have been about half the length。 C-

It is by pure coincidence that I picked this up at 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death but I am so glad I did。 She simultaneously wanted for nothing and wanted for everything。 Flawed, certainly, but all the more admirable for those flaws as she set herself apart from the perceived perfection of the British monarchy。

1。5 stars。 Went into this really hoping that it would be an enjoyable read。 Alas, it wasn't, because the chronicler was either unaware of or forgot the most important rule about writing a biography on someone: being impartial no matter what。 It's a very one-sided affair that portrayed her both as lacking any sort of agency in her life regarding her marriage and feeling trapped by it, and yet being almost saint-like in her actions toward others。 Everyone is the villain, out to get the poor, helpl 1。5 stars。 Went into this really hoping that it would be an enjoyable read。 Alas, it wasn't, because the chronicler was either unaware of or forgot the most important rule about writing a biography on someone: being impartial no matter what。 It's a very one-sided affair that portrayed her both as lacking any sort of agency in her life regarding her marriage and feeling trapped by it, and yet being almost saint-like in her actions toward others。 Everyone is the villain, out to get the poor, helpless damsel and she's left with a very small support network is the picture painted, and thus it was a slog to get through。 Hopefully there are better books where she was the subject, but for this one。。。 definitely a hard pass if it hasn't been read previously。P。S。 the title is also a lie, because not once is anything in 'her own words' It's all the thoughts of the writer, and as stated already his viewpoint was skewed far in favour of her。 。。。more

I grew up hearing all about Diana and the Royal family as my mother is a huge Diana and Royal family fan。 I honestly never thought I’d read a Diana book but I’m glad I did。 Some things I already knew from my mother’s chatting of course but others were interesting and new to me as well。 This was written before Diana passed away so you have to keep that in mind while reading it。

I started reading this book in 2012 after I found it tucked inside an old donated suitcase。 I finally finished it 10 years later。 This book was truly eye-opening and tragic。 I would recommend this book biography to anybody that loves history。

One of the best biographies I’ve read。 Diana’s story is heart breaking and infuriating。

Learned a lot about her and the royal family。 I would’ve given it a 4 but it’s hard to know how reliable all the info is so that kept it at a 3 for me。 I still learned a lot though。

I think the Monarchy should be totally dismantled。 They are all a bunch of self absorbed, entitled brats, living off the backs of the British people。 They continue to be held up out of tradition。 Diana's story is a testament to the disfunction that continues to be allowed。 It's all terrible。 I think the Monarchy should be totally dismantled。 They are all a bunch of self absorbed, entitled brats, living off the backs of the British people。 They continue to be held up out of tradition。 Diana's story is a testament to the disfunction that continues to be allowed。 It's all terrible。 。。。more

Morton's a careful writer, but he told as much of the story as he could。What a loss for all of us that she's gone。 So glad she had achieved some freedom if even for a short while。 Morton's a careful writer, but he told as much of the story as he could。What a loss for all of us that she's gone。 So glad she had achieved some freedom if even for a short while。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This is a great biography of a multifaceted, extraordinary woman。 However, there are a couple of instances where Morton deliberately excludes some of the more controversial details about Diana that puts her in a bad light。 For example, in both the transcript of Diana’s interviews and in Morton’s voice, they mention an incident between Diana and her stepmother Raine Legge at a rehearsal for her younger brother Charles Spencer’s wedding。 From the beginning, Diana and her siblings did not like Rain This is a great biography of a multifaceted, extraordinary woman。 However, there are a couple of instances where Morton deliberately excludes some of the more controversial details about Diana that puts her in a bad light。 For example, in both the transcript of Diana’s interviews and in Morton’s voice, they mention an incident between Diana and her stepmother Raine Legge at a rehearsal for her younger brother Charles Spencer’s wedding。 From the beginning, Diana and her siblings did not like Raine。 She came into their lives after their parents painful divorce, with no proper introduction, rearanged their living situation and even refused to allow the children to visit their father when he was taken to hospital after suffering from a brain aneurysm, insisting that “he needed rest, not agitation。”While the Spencer children got full on angry at Raine from the start, Diana’s anger and dislike of Raine festered and bubbled for over a decade and came to a head at her brother’s wedding。 By that time, she was stuck in a miserable marriage, neglected by an uncaring husband and suffering from bulimia and post-natal depression。 When she saw that her father and Raine completely ignored her mother at the rehearsal, she saw red and confronted Raine, letting out all of her frustration on her。 What isn’t in the book is that Diana actually pushed Raine, an elderly woman, down the stairs, leaving her bruised and shook up, which caused her father to not speak to her for several months。 And Diana felt immense satisfaction from it。 Perhaps because this incident is so cartoonish and so incredibly out of character for Diana, an outwardly lovely woman who always wanted to care for those who were sick and outcasts, that it would be too controversial to put in a book that is supposed to ignite sympathy for her at a time when she was desperate to leave the royal family。 She also stalked one of her married lovers, making phone calls in the middle of the night - and also started a rumour that her children’s nanny, Tiggy, had an affair and gotten pregnant with her husband Prince Charles, simply because she was spending too much time with the children and said she was a better influence on them than Diana。I definitely believe that when writing about historical figures, one shouldn’t condense the more controversial aspects of that person’s life in order to paint a better picture。 Human beings are flawed, some less, some more, but always flawed and make mistakes。 It’s disingenuous to sugar coat history in order to make it convenient。 。。。more

A balanced, detailed and fascinating account of a woman’s struggle to become herself amidst unbearable scrutiny and judgement。 That Diana did not survive her struggle is not surprising, but what is surprising is the extraordinary power and fascination she continues to hold in the public’s mind。 This was a story that needed to be told - in her own words as well as the views of those who knew her best。

Diana Spencer was born in 1961。 She had a somewhat tumultuous home life, as her parents were distraught over the death of one child and the lack of a male heir。 (It is so annoying to me that male heirs are the most valuable。) Her parents divorced when she was seven。 Her father gained custody, and remarried。 Diana did not get along with her stepmother, Raine, Countess of Dartmouth。 She met Prince Charles in 1977 while he was dating Diana's older sister, Sarah。 (Gross。) He was 29 and Diana was 16。 Diana Spencer was born in 1961。 She had a somewhat tumultuous home life, as her parents were distraught over the death of one child and the lack of a male heir。 (It is so annoying to me that male heirs are the most valuable。) Her parents divorced when she was seven。 Her father gained custody, and remarried。 Diana did not get along with her stepmother, Raine, Countess of Dartmouth。 She met Prince Charles in 1977 while he was dating Diana's older sister, Sarah。 (Gross。) He was 29 and Diana was 16。 (Gross。) He proposed to her in 1981, to which her unfortunate reply was yes。 Her introduction into royal life was depressing。 She was alone, ridiculed for her behaviors that were not "proper" enough。 Her future husband did not love her, just married her because she was a more acceptable bride than his skank of a mistress。 She became pregnant with her first son, Prince William。 She had another son, Prince Harry, after that。 She did not defer to the royal family in choosing their names, which was a break from tradition that was not accepted happily。 She also made decisions regarding their schools, nannies, outings, and other activities that were generally controlled by the royal family。 She suffered from an eating disorder and depression, and none of her treatment by members of the royal family or her sorry husband helped that。 She engaged in affairs, and that was just so terrible, but her sorry husband could and it was FINE。 She was hounded by the media, especially once she started dating someone who wasn't white。 She did a lot of charity work, and was generally seen as a very kind and loving person to children, women, all races, and those who had AIDS。 It was so sad that her life was so sad and that it ended when she was so young。 I have several books by Andrew Morton, and I have enjoyed the ones that I have read。 I enjoyed this book as well, even though it is not my favorite book of his。 I've read a few reviews about how this is one side of the story and it is biased。 Perhaps, but it is HER story。 It's not the story that is presented by the palace or by the tabloids。 It is HER story。 Her voice was taken from her by being married into what she married into。 Her voice was taken by gossip, speculation, and hounding。 Her voice was taken away by her death at the hands of people who didn't care about the safety of others, but their own interests。 What happened to this HUMAN BEING was disgusting。 Just because people are celebrities or royals does not mean that they are not human beings, entitled to life。 I liked this book well enough, and I am looking forward to reading the couple of other books that I own by him。 。。。more
